There are two main cooling methods for screw air compressors: air cooling and water cooling.
Air-cooled cooling mode
working principle:
the air-cooled cooling method uses the fluidity of air to take away heat. It is usually realized by a radiator and a fan. The radiator transfers the heat generated by the compressor to the air, and the fan accelerates the flow of the air to take away the heat.
Advantages:
- strong environmental adaptability: The air-cooled cooling method is not limited by water resources and can be used in basically any area.
- low cost: No additional water cooling equipment is required, which saves investment costs.
- Simple maintenance: The main maintenance work is to clean the fan and radiator regularly, which is relatively simple and convenient.
Disadvantages:
- relatively poor cooling effect compared with water-cooled, the cooling effect of air-cooled may not be significant enough, especially in high temperature environments.
- loud noise: The operation of the fan will produce a certain amount of noise.
- Affected by air quality: If the surrounding air quality is not good, it is easy to pollute the air compressor and compressed air. In an environment with poor air quality, if air-cooled cooling is selected, it is recommended to load filter equipment to prevent pollution.
Water-cooled cooling mode
working principle:
the water-cooled cooling method uses the fluidity and temperature difference of the cooling water to keep the temperature of the air compressor equipment within a certain range. In the circulating process, the cooling water exchanges heat with the compressor through the water cooler to take away the heat generated by the compressor. After the cooling water passes through the radiator, the temperature rises, and then it is cooled by a cooling tower or cooler and recycled.
Advantages:
- good cooling effect water-cooled cooling usually has a better cooling effect, especially in high temperature environments.
- Cleaning effect the cooling water can play a certain cleaning role when flowing inside the air compressor, which helps to extend the maintenance and cleaning cycle of the equipment and improve the quality of the compressed air.
- stable operation: Less affected by the external environment, relatively stable operation.
Disadvantages:
- limited by water resources: Restricted use in areas with scarce water resources.
- High maintenance costs: The cooling water in the water-cooling equipment needs to be replaced regularly, and may face problems such as scale, which increases maintenance costs. The cooling water may contain calcium and magnesium plasma, which is easy to form scale in the cooler and affect the cooling efficiency.
- Possible scaling corrosion: Impurities and ions in the cooling water may cause corrosion to the cooler and affect the service life of the equipment.
Select Recommendations
when choosing the cooling method of screw air compressor, it should be considered comprehensively according to the actual demand, working environment, resource conditions and budget:
- water resources condition: If the water resources are sufficient and the cooling effect is high, the water-cooled cooling method can be selected. If water resources are scarce or cost and maintenance requirements are high, air-cooled cooling can be selected.
- Ambient temperature: In high temperature environments, water-cooled cooling methods usually have better cooling effects. In a low temperature environment, the air-cooled cooling method may be more economical and practical.
- Equipment scale generally speaking, large screw air compressors prefer water-cooled cooling to cope with higher heat generation and better heat dissipation requirements. The small and medium-sized screw air compressor may be more air-cooled cooling.
In general, air-cooled and water-cooled cooling methods have their own advantages and disadvantages, and the choice of which method depends on the specific application scenarios and needs.
